Rootstrata (Artist)

Freddy Fesaitu formed this band in 1984 and the original members at the time were Ioane Burese who first coined the Rootstrata title, Porgy or George Fiji Veikoso as he is known today, Peter Rabaka, Ben Rabaka, Pedro Pakelo Morris and Kitione Mateyawa.

The band was formed by a group of disillusioned but talented youths living in Raiwaqa in the early, 1980s, who saw music as a way out of a dull and futureless existence in the suburbs.
Inspired by Bob Marley they pioneered Reggae music in Fiji alon with another group Exodus. They had tours around the Pacific and Asia including concerts in Hong Kong and Thailand. Freedy gained more notoriety when he was actively involved after the events of 1987 in the iTaukei rights movement.

According to an interview in the Fiji Times he says ‘he was of the mistaken belief that foreigners were overtaking our national resource ownership, politically, economically and socially.”
The group broke up in 1990 and Freddy after a 6 month stint in prison converted to Christianity from Islam and has been actively involved since.

Podgy aka George ‘Fiji’ Veikoso went on to have a brilliant music career in Hawaii.

To the author or the site developers, Please note that by saying and I qoute “The Greatest Fijian Music and Lyrics Collection” is incorrect and inaccurate especially on your part. Only because some or other traditional fijian songs like Wai Ni Bu Ni Ovalau and others doesn’t not appear on this site. And also, Roostrata have other fijian songs which you don’t have and is not available on this website. So much for saying, “The Greatest Fijian Music and Lyrics Collection”. Could this be updated and look into? Thanks.

We have the largest collection of lyrics online. We may not have all Fijian Song Lyrics but you will not find any other site with the current size of collection. We continue to update our collection and increase our database. If you would like to provide the lyric to ‘Wai ni Bu ni Ovalau’ we would be happy to put it up on the site.

As for the title that will remain for now until any other online site becomes the largest and greatest. Vinaka.
